Mild weather, little wind and active feeding fish – reason enough for a short trip to the Ebro Delta. Guest Philipp Sonntag reports:
Fishing or hunting? – With Peter as your guide in the Ebro Delta, it feels like you get both!
But first things first. On easter monday, my partner and I set off by car from southern Germany to Spain/Riumar.
Why travel by car when Barcelona is easily accessible by plane? – Because we didn’t want to jeopardise our fishing holiday with the threat of staff strikes at the airports.
After a very relaxed 14-hour drive, we arrived in Riumar, which seemed almost deserted in the low season and after the easter holidays.
What almost turned out to be an obstacle in the search for a restaurant on the first evening turned out to be an advantage during the days that followed e.g. on walks
as we had the beautiful sandy beaches almost exclusive to ourselves.
The fishing:
Peter launched the boat at the agreed meeting point on the Ebro at 12:00 noon the following day and off we went. The starting time varies depending on the weather conditions, the “activity” of the fish and the preferences of the guests.
“Flying” up the Ebro on Peter’s boat with a combination of excitement and anticipation in my stomach… all that would have been missing was Richard Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries” and the resulting picture would have been complete.
In pursuit of the hunters…
During the four days with Peter, we were always actively looking for jumping tuna or seagulls to target them with stickbaits.
In order to get within casting range as quickly as possible, including the right wind direction, Peter gives his boat everything – yes, really everything, which was too much for some caps that were not held on to!
And so we chased from one spot to the next and experienced action-packed fishing. Unfortunately, there weren’t the really big feeding scenes that occur in midsummer, so you often only had 1-2 casts to catch a fish.
Over the four days we caught 4 bluefin tuna, which is certainly easy to top in one day, depending on the time of year. But considering the time of year and the fact that the Ebro had coloured the water brown in a huge area of the delta due to the heavy rainfall of the previous week, we were very satisfied with the result. Peter is an absolute expert when it comes to fishing and a cool guy from whom we were able to learn a lot besides fishing.
All in all, we enjoyed it so much that we have already booked our next trip at the end of july.
Â
P.S.: When the tuna were taking a siesta, there was variety on the water with dolphins, moonfish, turtles…
Â
Many thanks to Peter and Robert for the great experience.
