FISHING IN COSTA RICA:

Unique: Apart from us, there are currently only two other boats in the whole of Drake Bay that are specially equipped for fishing trips. A few other boats are only used for tourist excursions. This means that we can fish in Costa Rica without competition for the most part!

The fishing area is very diverse: Close to the coast, many reefs and rock structures offer ideal habitats for a great variety of species, just as we are used to on the Pacific coast.

Whether with poppers, stickbaits or livebait – here you can let off steam to your heart’s content and be surprised which fish will be hooked next.

Offshore, many more opportunities open up: Pursue predatory schools of tuna with poppers or livebaits, or take a relaxing trolling session for marlin, sailfish, wahoo or mahi mahi.

Main fish species in Costa Rica: Rooster, Jack Crevalle, Cubera Snapper, Amberjack, Almaco Jack, Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna, Spanish Mackerel, Sailfish, Marlin and many more.

TYPICAL ITINERARY OF YOUR FISHING TRIP IN COSTA RICA:

Day 1:    Departure from Europe & arrival in San José on the same day (overnight in hotel).
Day 2: Domestic flight to Drake Bay, pick-up from the airport and transfer to the lodge
Day 3-8:    6 full days of fishing
Day 9:    Domestic flight to San José, return flight to Europe in the evening
Day 10: Arrival at home

Tip: It is highly recommended to extend your stay for another day. You can visit the famous Corcovado National Park or explore the area around Drake Bay.

THE RIGHT FISHING TACKLE IN COSTA RICA

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BORROW THE FISHING TACKLE:

High-quality rental tackle is already included in the offer on request! If you wish, you can arrive just with hand luggage and be ready to go fishing in Costa Rica. If you are interested, just let us know before you start your trip and we will make sure that your rental tackle is ready for you on site.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BRING YOUR OWN TACKLE:

We recommend a good quality popper rod with a casting weight of around 150-180 g in lengths between 7’6″ and 8 feet, which covers pretty much all fishing methods with poppers and stickbaits. (There are a lot of good rods on the market now).For some time now, we have preferred 3-piece models for fishing trips to Costa Rica, which are much easier to transport in larger suitcases/travel bags. This saves the bulky rod tube and additional costs for luggage.

For reels, spinning reels like Shimano’s Stella 14000XG (or 10000SW) are recommended. If you specifically want to fish for larger tuna in Costa Rica, we tend to advise 18000 models with larger line capacity and stronger brakes. We recommend using lines in the 80-100 lbs class. With thinner lines you can cast a little further, but unfortunately you will also have to complain about more line breaks.

For light tackle fishing, stationary reels of the 6000 size are best suited in combination with lighter popper rods with a casting weight of up to 100g.

For jigging we use special short jig rods with a recommended jig weight of up to 300 g in combination with a Shimano Stella or Twin Power 8000PG. For more line capacity we use 14000 spools, which easily hold more than 250m of PE6-8 class line.

Good poppers for Costa Rica include Heru Cubera, Dumbell Pop (L) and HALCO Roosta Popper. As a stickbait, the J1 Tropic from HYBRIDA should not be missing. We will be happy to advise you personally.

We recommend that you bring a good selection yourself.

BUT: If something is missing or some bait gets lost while fishing, the boats also have a small selection ready to help out. Joe in the lodge is sure to have a bait or two for you as well.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT COSTA RICA

The country has 4.7 million inhabitants and only an area of 100 km².
There are 26 national parks and about ¼ of the country’s surface is protected jungle area – home to numerous exotic animals.
The language spoken in Costa Rica is predominantly Spanish, but also English.
Costa Rica is also known as the Switzerland of Central America.
Costa Rica is considered a particularly happy country. Family and nature are clearly worth more to the people than material things.

THE BOATS DURING YOUR FISHING TRIP

In Drake Bay we use up to three boats:

Walkaround 24-26′ centre console boats with 250 hp.

All centre consoles are fully equipped for sport fishing and are powered either by a twin engine (YAMAHA four-stroke) or by a single large power unit. Each boat has VHF radio, GPS, echo sounder, a livewell and Tuna Tubes. Outriggers are also part of the equipment so that you can go trolling at any time.

The experienced guides know their stuff and will take you straight to the fish without any detours.

ACCOMMODATION WITH A FEEL-GOOD GUARANTEE

Fish during the day and enjoy the rest of the time full of peace and harmony in the midst of Costa Rica’s impressive nature! Situated on a picturesque mountain top in Drake Bay, our lodge offers an incomparable view of the rainforest, the national park and Drake Bay itself.

While friendly howler monkeys provide the morning wake-up service, toucans will remind you in the evening when it’s “gin-o’clock”. Thanks to the cool sea breeze from Drake Bay, you will fully enjoy your end of day at the lodge and make many an exciting discovery: Every day, numerous birds and animals look after themselves at the lodge, e.g. macaws, spider, howler and capuchin monkeys, coatis, tayras, breathtaking butterflies and sometimes even a jaguarundi.

THE BEST TIME TO FISH IN COSTA RICA

The dry season from December to April is the most popular time to travel if you want to fish in Costa Rica.

The rainy season begins in May, but this does not make fishing any less attractive. Daytime temperatures drop into bearable ranges and showers are only occasional.

In October and November the lodge remains closed, as the rains are often too heavy to fish.

For better orientation, here is a small annual overview of the main fish species to be expected:

December – January: Mahi Mahi, Sailfish
January – April: Sailfish, Marlin
April – September: Wahoo, Snook
All year round: Rooster, Jack Crevalle, Yellowfin, Amberjack

From January to April, sardines gather in large schools near the coast, which is especially interesting for inshore fishing.
