Hosted group trip – Kwanza Lodge 2024
Now that our new group is already in the starting blocks for the next group trip, we realized that we have not yet shared a report from last year’s tour …
From African Threadfin till Blue Marlin
Fishing in Angola offers diverse opportunities to pursue various species of fish using different methods. Due to the great variety of species, one never quite knows what will be on the hook next. Whether it’s shore fishing, rubber fishing in the river, coastal fishing with poppers and stickbaits, live bait fishing for tarpon, or offshore trolling for mahi-mahi, sailfish, or even marlin – the possibilities are unlimited and are sure to fulfill every angler’s wishes.

The Kwanza Lodge is the only provider on-site. Thus, besides a few local anglers and fishermen, you will have the waters all to yourself.
The fishing grounds are very versatile: The river and the estuary directly in front of the lodge offer excellent fishing opportunities for African threadfin, corvina, or even cubera snapper at certain times of the year. Sometimes, the jack crevalle can be found just a stone’s throw away from the pier. Along the river mouth and coastline, various underwater structures provide ideal living conditions for many species of fish, attracting plenty of predators. For example, here you can try your luck trolling for huge tarpon with live bait. Poppers and stickbaits will also not go unnoticed by the massive barracudas, cubera snappers, or jack crevalles. Offshore, the possibilities are almost limitless. Fish with jigs for amberjacks or with light spinning rods for mahi-mahi. Trolling along the weed line is often entertaining, and sailfish or even marlin are never far away.
Main fish species in Angola: African threadfin, tarpon, corvina, cubera snapper, jack crevalle, barracuda, mahi-mahi, sailfish, blue marlin, and many more.

Day 1: Departure from Europe
Day 2: Arrival in Luanda, Angola in the morning, approximately 90 minutes transfer to Kwanza Lodge
Days 3-8: 6 full days of fishing
Day 9: Transfer back to Luanda, evening flight back to Europe
Day 10: Arrival back home
Tip: It is advisable to extend your stay by one day on-site. This way, you can visit, for example, the famous Miradouro da Lua viewpoint, which is particularly impressive at sunset, plan a visit to the Kissama National Park, or explore the coast on your own. The beaches around Cabo Ledo are well known for their unique landscape and as a premier surfing spot.
By the way: You prefer not to fish in Angola with a mixed guided group but rather be on the water in a small group of 2-4 anglers? Just let us know! You are welcome to travel to Angola on your own and go fishing – we offer individual trip planning and transfer options for that.

High-quality rental tackle is already included in the offer on request! If you wish, you can arrive just with hand luggage and be ready to go fishing in Angola. If you are interested, just let us know before you start your trip and we will make sure that your rental tackle is ready for you on site.

Trolling gear for mahi-mahi, sailfish, or blue marlin is available on-site. Likewise, you don’t need to bring your own fishing gear for live bait fishing for tarpon. If you bring your own equipment: A heavy pike or light catfish rod with a 5000 or 6000 reel as light gear for river fishing or light spinning fishing at sea.
Jig rods of class PE6 with a jig weight of up to 300g combined with an 8000 or 10000 reel with PG gear ratio for jigging for amberjack.
Popper rod of class PE6 up to maximum PE8 for popper fishing for cubera snapper and large jack crevalle, paired with size 14000 reels with high gear ratio. Appropriate gear for surf fishing if you prefer to fish from the shore. In preparation for the tour, you will receive detailed tour information from us, including our personal bait recommendations for each fishing method.

The boats are constructed in catamaran style and are perfectly suited to fishing and the local conditions, whether you’re spending your angling day on the open sea, near the coast, or in the river. They are equipped with all necessary electronic devices, rod holders, safety equipment, and reliable engines. An experienced guide ensures that you’ll get the most out of each day, depending on the conditions and the target fish species. While our tours mainly involve fishing from the boat, we’re also open to attempting fishing from the shore and in the surf, depending on the time of day and tides, upon request.

The lodge is situated directly on the Kwanza River near its mouth, approximately 80 km south of Luanda. It offers a paradise of peace and tranquility, far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Comfortable, air-conditioned cabins, cleaning and laundry services, high-quality cuisine with local and international dishes, a fantastic swimming pool with charming views, and a professional crew make your stay a perfect African getaway. Each bungalow features multiple beds, air conditioning, and a private bathroom with toilet and shower with hot water. Enjoy your first coffee of the morning on the riverbank terrace at sunrise and start your fishing day relaxed after breakfast.

The climate in the Kwanza region is tropical with temperatures normally ranging from 25 to 30 degrees during the dry period (january to early may) and a water temperature from 25 to 27 degrees.
During those months the water offshore is blue and it’s the best time for massive tarpon, jacks, various snappers, amberjack, barracuda, dorado (mahi mahi), sailfish & blue marlin, despite you can almost catch everything all year around.
When fishing the winter season (mid-june to early september) please bring a light jacket in combination with a fleece hoody. Especially early in the morning, during the night or on cloudy days temperature barely pass the 20 degrees mark due to the cold Benguela current with around 17 degrees of water temperature off the coast. Those months are the best for jacks, mirrorfish, giant african threadfin, cubera snapper and you mainly fish the river in front of the lodge or close to the shore and the river mouth.
