Successful season kick-off in Oman

From May to September, the monsoon, also known as “Khareef”, prevails in southern Oman, and heavy rain and strong winds make trips impossible. After the end of this period, the water boils and places that have not been fished for months are full of fish. That is why our tours at the start of the season are in high demand. Tour guide Albrecht Spaun reports on his week.

We were lucky enough to spend the second week of October at the beautiful Noukhada Lodge in southern Oman.
The journey to Salalah, with a short stopover in Doha, was stress-free and all our luggage arrived complete and undamaged.
After a night at the hotel, Captain Swabir picked us up after lunch and after a 4-hour drive through impressive desert and mountain landscapes, we arrived at the lodge.

The lodge offers three triple rooms, each with its own bathroom, a large communal area for rigging, a dining room and a large terrace with lounge furniture. The entire crew was very friendly and accommodating, and the food was excellent.

About the fishing: We were very lucky with the weather and were able to visit the famous Hallaniyat Islands every day. The abundance of fish around the islands is absolutely insane. Double and triple hookups were almost standard. In the first few days, the Blacktip Trevally were particularly cooperative, and they also took stickbaits and jigs in very decent sizes. We mixed the popping and stickbaiting with regular jigging stops. During speed jigging, we mainly caught amberjacks, while various snappers dominated during slow jigging.

24 different fish species in one week

In total, we were able to catch 24 different species of fish.
After a few days with occasional GT catches, I asked our guide to spend a day only fishing GT spots and to do without any light tackle and jigging fun. The “blasting” with heavy equipment is a bit exhausting, but in the end we had 17 GTs in the boat that day and some, unfortunately also large specimens, long-line released. 😉

To cut a long story short: Oman is a dream fishing destination. The landscape is epic, the people friendly and the abundance of fish more than impressive.
