We had already scheduled the first test trip to the Seychelles for the fall of 2023, but at the time we had to reschedule and replan a bit. At the end of February 2025, the time had finally come and we set off for the Seychelles with a group of 8 anglers. After reading so many reports about monster doggies and huge giant trevallies, we were full of expectations, highly motivated and armed to the teeth. What we were able to experience then exceeded our wildest dreams and expectations.
Travel by catamaran
We went out to the outer reefs and drop-offs in a spacious catamaran in search of the big dogtooth tunas. Big fish can only be caught where they are left alone or are difficult to reach. Our target area was over 200 kilometers away from the main island of Mahé. With the catamaran as a floating base, this is not a problem and it is possible without long daily journeys. We used PE8-10 class popping rods and equally strong jigging rods. You just don’t compromise when it comes to big fish.
Doggies up to 175 cm and GTs up to 127 cm
The largest Dogtooth, estimated at 175 cm in length, weighed about 70 kg, but we also had other large fish, such as 164, 159, 154, 148 cm and many more.
Unfortunately, one or two large fish were lost, but that’s just part of the game.
But the rest of the variety and quantity was also impressive, and so we were able to catch, for example, impressive amberjacks, numerous snappers and giant trevallies up to 127 cm (approx. 40 kg).
It was never boring, because you never really knew what would be on the hook next.
