Now that our new group is already in the starting blocks for the next group trip, we realized that we have not yet shared a report from last year’s tour with you. I think we can look back on a great week with varied fishing and lots of fun and, organized by the different types of fishing, just let the pictures speak for themselves.
Jigging
When jigging at water depths of 60 to 100 meters, we never had to wait long for a bite before a strong-fighting amberjack grabbed the speed jig or slow jig. A few attempts with live bait also usually yielded quick results.

Spinning
When spin fishing, the boats either moved close to the shore along the coast or near the mouth of the river. Large barracudas, jack crevalle and other species made for entertaining fishing. Offshore, there was the water boundary between the river water and the crystal-clear, blue sea water, the so-called “weed line”. All the plant debris that the river carries with it also collects here, which means cover, food and, consequently, lots of fish. The Mahis were usually not long in coming.

Trolling
Offshore along the weed line, other predators were lurking, of course, and we tried targeted trolling for sailfish and marlin. The largest marlin was an incredible 600 lbs, and Heiko was able to land the fish after a brutal 50-minute fight. Of course, the occasional mahi-mahi was unavoidable.

Safari
We had planned an extra day for this tour to see a bit of the area and explore the possibilities besides fishing. Whether it was a short visit to the Miradouro da Lua (viewpoint of the Moon Valley) or to Kissama National Park, the day went by quickly and was full of experiences.

A visit to KWANZA LODGE is definitely worth a visit and even non-anglers get their money’s worth here. The picturesque location right on the river is unique. Living right on the water and being able to enjoy your morning coffee with a view of the water or a cool beer in the pool in the evening, that’s what you can call a great vacation. Here are a few more impressions of the lodge.
