In October 2024, we set off with a small and exclusive group of travelers to one of the best rivers for trophy peacock bass in the entire Amazon region—the Rio Jurubaxi.
The Jurubaxi is a tributary of the Rio Negro in Brazil and is located on the land of the indigenous Téa-Jurubaxi tribe and is not accessible to the public. Since 2017, this tributary or side arm of the Rio Negro has been designated a protected area, and fortunately, our partner in Brazil was awarded exclusive fishing rights for the approximately 270 km long stretch of river in a tender process in 2018. This means that this spot on earth has become accessible, at least for us anglers.
Something similar is known only from Rio Marie, about 200 km away as the crow flies, but that is reserved exclusively for fly fishermen.

We spent a total of six days fishing the main river, its tributaries, and lagoons with one clear goal in mind: MISSION 80+!
A peacock bass (Cichla temensis) measuring more than 80 cm in length and weighing over 20 lb (pounds) is the dream of every peacock bass angler, and nowhere else are the chances of catching one of these coveted specimens so high. To cut to the chase: everyone in our tour group caught at least one specimen above the magic mark. The largest fish measured an impressive 84 cm during our week, but there is still plenty of room for improvement, as the record bass from the Jurubaxi weighed an impressive 27 lb and measured 90 cm in length.
In the week before us, another monster was caught, which naturally sets the bar very high for the next tours.

Not only peacock bass were caught, but also various other species such as butterfly peacock (Cichla orinocensis), piranha, arowana, and traira. Just let the following picture gallery sink in.
Fishing is highly regulated and only possible for approximately 12 weeks per year. The period runs from the end of August to the end of December, and we have been able to secure one of the coveted weeks for a maximum of 10 anglers per week for 2025 and 2026. As 2026 is already sold out and one week in 2027 is also booked, we were able to secure a second week for 2027 as a special exception. So, if you would like to take part in one of the tours, you should not wait too long to make your decision.
