FISHING IN ANGOLA:
The Kwanza Lodge is the only provider on-site. Thus, besides a few local anglers and fishermen, you will have the waters all to yourself.
The fishing grounds are very versatile: The river and the estuary directly in front of the lodge offer excellent fishing opportunities for African threadfin, corvina, or even cubera snapper at certain times of the year. Sometimes, the jack crevalle can be found just a stone’s throw away from the pier. Along the river mouth and coastline, various underwater structures provide ideal living conditions for many species of fish, attracting plenty of predators. For example, here you can try your luck trolling for huge tarpon with live bait. Poppers and stickbaits will also not go unnoticed by the massive barracudas, cubera snappers, or jack crevalles. Offshore, the possibilities are almost limitless. Fish with jigs for amberjacks or with light spinning rods for mahi-mahi. Trolling along the weed line is often entertaining, and sailfish or even marlin are never far away.
Main fish species in Angola: African threadfin, tarpon, corvina, cubera snapper, jack crevalle, barracuda, mahi-mahi, sailfish, blue marlin, and many more.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ANGOLA
- Angola stretches over an area of approximately 1.25 million square kilometers, making it the seventh largest country in Africa and roughly three times the size of Germany. The capital of the country is Luanda.
- Angola is a melting pot of various cultures, reflected in the rich cultural diversity of the country. Although Angola declared its independence from Portugal in 1975, Portuguese is the official language of the country. About one-third of the population speaks Portuguese, while over 40 other languages are spoken. Many of the indigenous languages have been preserved and are still recognized, including Umbundu, Kimbundu, Kikongo, and Tchokwe.
- Angola could be the birthplace of samba. The famous Brazilian samba dance is well known worldwide, but did you know it may have originated in Angola? In Angola, the traditional dance is called semba and is considered the root of what later developed into samba in Brazil.
- Angolans love their stews. Stews play a significant role in Angolan cuisine. The most common ingredients in these stews are beans, chicken, pork, fish, sweet potato, and okra. We recommend trying the moamba de galinha, a chicken stewed in red palm oil sauce.
- Angola has impressive flora and fauna. Angola ranges from the coast, through lush green hills to the plains of dry savannah, and is home to a variety of unique protected areas and national parks. The most well-known include Bicuar National Park, Iona National Park, and Quiçama National Reserve. In the heart of Angola, in the province of Malanje, lies the Kalandula Waterfall. Standing at 105 meters tall and 400 meters wide, the Kalandula Waterfall is the second largest in Africa, second only to the Victoria Falls.
THE BOATS DURING YOUR FISHING TOUR IN ANGOLA
The boats are constructed in catamaran style and are perfectly suited to fishing and the local conditions, whether you’re spending your angling day on the open sea, near the coast, or in the river. They are equipped with all necessary electronic devices, rod holders, safety equipment, and reliable engines. An experienced guide ensures that you’ll get the most out of each day, depending on the conditions and the target fish species. While our tours mainly involve fishing from the boat, we’re also open to attempting fishing from the shore and in the surf, depending on the time of day and tides, upon request.

THE BEST TIME FOR YOUR FISHING TRIP TO ANGOLA
The climate in the Kwanza region is tropical with temperatures normally ranging from 25 to 30 degrees during the dry period (january to early may) and a water temperature from 25 to 27 degrees.
During those months the water offshore is blue and it’s the best time for massive tarpon, jacks, various snappers, amberjack, barracuda, dorado (mahi mahi), sailfish & blue marlin, despite you can almost catch everything all year around.
When fishing the winter season (mid-june to early september) please bring a light jacket in combination with a fleece hoody. Especially early in the morning, during the night or on cloudy days temperature barely pass the 20 degrees mark due to the cold Benguela current with around 17 degrees of water temperature off the coast. Those months are the best for jacks, mirrorfish, giant african threadfin, cubera snapper and you mainly fish the river in front of the lodge or close to the shore and the river mouth.
