The Amazon rainforest and its rivers remain unpredictable and are often subject to strong water level fluctuations. Unfortunately, this was also the case for our tour group in November, as previous unusually heavy rainfall caused the river level to rise enormously and targeted fishing for Arapaima became a challenge. Thanks to the exceptional local knowledge of our guides, the group still managed to land a few nice fish, although an unusually large number of fish were lost in the fight. When fishing for the jungle monsters, the rods must never be too soft, as the hook needs to be securely anchored in the bony mouth after the bite.
Even though Arapaimas are not particularly persistent fighters, they demand a lot from the angler during the fight. The explosive jumps in particular are dangerous and the fish often manage to free themselves from the hook.
Francis also managed to catch a few fish on artificial lures afterwards.
Even after landing, the Arapaimas remain explosive and dangerous. The GoPro can easily get lost. Fortunately, Francis was able to find the camera again later.
